Third graders will havehomework Monday through Thursday. This will be any work that is not finished during the day. For example, it could be a page for spelling, math facts, or reading. This work will help your child practice the required third grade skills. If your child is using the time at school, the homework should only take about thirty minutes. Please ask your child about their homework each day and check the Student Planner and Homework Folder.Grades on homework are lowered if the paper is late. Perhaps you could set aside a time each day to work on homework with them. They will truly enjoy sharing their new knowledge with you. This will also allow you to keep up with what we are currently learning!
How to read the Student Planner
The reason for using the Student Planner and homework folder is to teach your child organizational strategies and prepare your child for their future years in school. Some children are naturally organized, while others need to learn to be organized. Please check your child’s Student Planner, papers in their Homework Folder nightly and return them to school the next day.
How the Student Planner works:
Any assignment written on the daily assignment sheet in the Student Planner needs to be returned to school the next day. For example, on the page for Monday; in the section for Spelling;“Page 14”couldhave been written by your child. This is brought home either for your child to finish or for you to check over the completed work. All the assignments written on Monday’s page should be returned to school on Tuesday. To help motivate the children to complete homework, they earn our classroom money to purchase a fun reward each Friday like math games, a seasonal craft, or a Read-a-thon.
Homework Folder:
We will use a Homework Folder. Inside the folder there are two pockets. One side says “Return to School”. This is for assignments that need to be finished or have been completed. The kids are given time to begin their work at school, but sometimes there may not be enough time to complete it. Please check over the assignments and return them to school the next day.
Late Assignments:
When an assignment is not returned when it is due, it is considered late. Your child will call home to leave a message asking you to help find the paper and return it. In addition, they will bring home another copy of the paper. When this late assignment is returned it is documented in the grade book. At the end of the grading period, all the late assignments accumulate and could reduce your child’s overall grade.
Redo Papers:
When an assignment receives a below average score, I will explain the concept again to your child. Then, your child will receive an opportunity to fix the mistakes and turn the paper in again for a higher, passing grade. My philosophy is to assure all the kids are successful and master third grade skills. This will be reflected on your child’s grade card. The opportunity to complete an assignment multiple times would be a “2,” which means your child received additional support.
